A kind of calico-printing with indigo in which the resists are so composed that they act as a mordant for other dyes, those parts of the cloth which by the resist are protected from the action of the indigo, and are thus left white, being dyed in turn by madder or quercitron-baik. The patterns so produced were thought to bear some resemblance to lapis lazuli; hence the name.
